May I point out that whoever said you needed the compiling tools to install the drivers for your sound card was heading you off in the wrong direction... the drivers for your sound card are contained in the kernel (because the module now used by default that contains the all the available sound card drivers is now part of the kernel, and does not need to be compiled separately as in the past).
Not that you don't need the compiling tools (if you should reinstall, make sure to include the "development" group of packages to have these tools installed from the outset), as you may need to recompile the kernel, or something else, during the course of your Linux use. You do need them, and it's good to have them.
But I would suggest that you post the actual problem with your sound card (maybe in the Mandrake section of the forums) and allow us to help you fix that before you go wildly compiling things
