How do I install anything on Linux?

I'm more nieve than you probably realise. I'm half way through with the help I was given yesterday regarding getting my NTFS partitions onto my Gnome desktop. I've downloaded the rpm file onto a floppy (as my windows part of the PC doesn't talk to the Linux part).
So when I come to type an install command, what exactly do i do with the file on the floppy? Will it automatically look there and pull it off? Or should I put it somewhere specific?
I really don't know, so please spell it out simply.
Thank you .

rpm's install automaticly just mount the floppy on a file system (mount /dev/fd0 in command line) and go to /floppy then just use the command rpm --install=/floppy/thepackagename

Check out this link. It's not very distro-specific, but it should be of use to you.
