How do I install a patch to a tarball?

I've downloaded a tarball with a needed driver. I've used tar to uncompress the file.

1) There are two make files, one in the main directory and one in a subdirectory. How do I know which one to use?

2) There's a directory called patches with one patch, and another patch that I downloaded with the tarball. How do I install the patches? Do I install both or just the most recent?

First thing to do is read the INSTALL & README files for instructions on compiling the code. Generally, you'd do the make in the top directory of the source tree. As far as appling the patches goes, use patch, something like:

patch -Np1 < nameof.patch

Patching is also generally done in the top directory. Which one to apply? Open the patch file in a editor and see what it does, else read any README that comes with, decide based on that.
