Question how do i install a new Linksys USB Ethernet adapter" model:USB300M on Linux

i'm new and just getting into Linux, - Went out and bought a Linksys "Wired" USB Ethernet adpater, model USB300M to get me on the network. I think the main problem is that I don't know how to install the driver on CD the that came with it or if it's even the right driver. I may need to find a Linux comperable driver with instructions on how to load the driver

I've already tried plugging it in and setting DHCP in NetSetup and rebooting. Another potential problem I noticed is when I choose "dhcp" in netcardconfig, it defaults back to manual entry of ip, gateway, mask, etc. as if the dhcp setting wasn't saved.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you need an adapter? Almost every notebook and desktop sold in the last ~5 years has one/two built in.

This thread is a month old but I am having issues with the same card and nothing seemed to be resolved with the original post.

@rweaver: the mac book air doesn't have a built in ethernet. With laptops wifi is more commonly used by some so I guess they feel the ehternet isn't as useful.

I am actually working on a project with the usb300m and and some linux machines it works fine right out of the box. On other machines it doesn't recognize the card, with others it recognizes the card but the device never shows up. Such as this output from dmesg showing the usb300m when it is plugged in and then removed:

Code:
usb 5-5: USB disconnect, address 3
eth1: unregister 'asix' usb-0000:00:1d.7-5, ASIX AX88772 USB 2.0 Ethernet
usb 5-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
usb 5-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
eth1: register 'asix' at usb-0000:00:1d.7-5, ASIX AX88772 USB 2.0 Ethernet, 00:23:69:8a:c6:fe
usb 5-5: USB disconnect, address 4
eth1: unregister 'asix' usb-0000:00:1d.7-5, ASIX AX88772 USB 2.0 Ethernet
It seems to be an issue with one of the drivers...not really sure which one. We updated the kernel from 2.6.21 to 2.6.27 and the card worked fine after than.

@singlespeeds: have you gotten anything to work yet? I still have one machine that doesn't bring the device up when the usb300m is plugged in.

thx
