How do I get printer working?

Ive got a samsung ML-1210 and it was working before upgrading to slack 12 and on boot it shows the model number in the bootup messages.

I installed the ppd file and used http://localhost:631 in a browser and it seems to have installed but I cannot print a test page and in KDE it shows the printer but does not respond at all.
When I get the dialog box to input a user and a password that does nothing no matter what I try.
Is there another way to install the printer? Do I need some other kind of driver?

Go back into localhost:631 and click on Manage Painters. Do you see a printer listed?

If no, then you have to define a printer to use cups.

If yes, go through the setup steps to see if it has a enable/disable setting somewhere that has to be enabled.

Yes, there is a printer but in one part it shows a canon because thats the only option I can choose when using a parallel port and another section shows the samsung because thats the ppd file I am using.
I dont have a canon and never have.
Ive been through all the settings and nothing changes when I make them. Even when i enter the root password it just acts like theres no printer.

Does Slack 12 include the Samsung driver for the ML-1210?

If not, you can get it here:

I tried to install it and I got this:

No protocol specified
./setup.sh: line 143: 5406 Aborted "$setup" "$@" 2>>$NULL
The setup program seems to have failed on x86/glibc-2.1

Please contact your Customer Support

What does that mean?
