how do i get onto the internet with suSE 8.1?

Even though suSE has very good support, they seem to expect you to have some intelligence of your own. Since I have none, Would somebody be so kind as to tell me, in simple, easy to read(even for a 4th grade reader) instructions how to get hooked up- I have entered my incoming POP3, and outgoing SMPT, but just get this "unrecognised url" message. If I could at least get internet, I could learn everything else in time, as I did with monopoly xp. I'm tired of, and disagree with the concept of a monopoly. Plus, I get tired of getting jammed with viruses designed for windows. Help me- I'm slipping! -Jeffy.

SO you can't get on the internet at all or just can't get email working?

Post a bit more detail to give people a starting point:

Are you on cable/dial-up/dsl or what?

Your problem may be that you have not completed the process of setting up your ISP connection. You may not have entered your Domain Name Server.

If not, then call your ISP and ask them what DNS server they use. Ask for the name in both letters and numbers. They will give you an answer in the form:

jimdandyisp.com
204.101.65.8

Then you can tell ppp what the DNS is in two ways:

1. As root run YaST2. In Advanced Networking there is a table of DNS names. Enter both the number name and letter name in that table and YaST2 will store the information in /etc/resolv.conf

2. You can edit /etc/resolv.conf with a text editor.and enter two lines in this format:

search jimdandyisp.com
nameserver 204.101.65.8
