How do I get my ethernet card to work?

PLEASE HELP!!! I am a new user to Linux and would like to make a more permanent switch over. The only problem is I NEED THE INTERNET!!! And of course my modem & ethernet card don't seem to want to be recognized. After using Belarc Advisor to find exactly what I have I found that I have installed the following:
Compaq 56K V.90 HSF Mini PCI Modem
Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethernet Adapter (10/100)
Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection

I went to the Intel website and downloaded the patch for the Linux system but I run into problems installing etc. If you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you all in advance.

To install new hardware or previously non-detected hardware try running "kudzu" in console,it should detect and install them. Also mentioning make sure that they are not win-hardware componets because they are a pian in da back side to install but are pissible

MODEM.
Plug-and-Play modems are not well supported by Linux. This means that you want a jumperable modem or an external modem, but try this site might help http://www.linmodems.org/

I tried as stated and it says that i don't have permission to run "kudzu". How could this be if I am the main (and only) user on the computer? Any suggestion?
