How do I get a driver for NVIDIA NV5?

I got another tower yesterday -- my other one died. System>Admin>Hardware Drivers says I have no proprietary drivers. Normally (for me, in the past), it would give me the option to install a NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver version 96; but not now. I'm running K/Ubuntu 9.04 and Firefox 3.0; 3.5.3. Here are my specs (sorry they're so long, but this is how it came out, and this is "lshw | less"):

When I ran the following, here's what I got:

randall@randall-desktop:~$ sudo nvidia-xconfig
[sudo] password for randall:

Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".

VALIDATION ERROR: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

line.

Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

randall@randall-desktop:~$

What do I need to do to fix that? I'm still a newbie; please assume that I know nothing. Any valid advice give me will be much appreciated.

Randall

I have not got the patience at the moment to slog thru that long file.

Have you checked the NVidia website and/or have you tried the official NVidia driver?

How do I get a driver for NVIDIA NV5?

Intel Corp. Pentium III (Coppermine)

clflush size : 32

processor : 1
stepping : 6
cpu MHz : 996.908
cache size : 256 KB
bogomips : 1993.79
clflush size : 32

I went to synaptic package manager and installed libglitz-glx1-dev (0.5.6-1), libglitz1-dev (0.5.6-1), and nvidia-glx-96-dev (96.43.10-0ubuntu1). I don't know what to select for NVIDIA NV5 [RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro]. Then I ran (and got):

randall@randall-desktop:~$ sudo nvidia-xconfig
[sudo] password for randall:

Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".

VALIDATION ERROR: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Device section "Configured Video Device" must have a Driver
line.

Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

randall@randall-desktop:~$

In the meantime, I had to shut my computer down and reboot. When I rebooted, there was no screen. So I rebooted in recovery mode, selected try to autofix graphics problems, then selected repair broken packages. My computer then did some stuff that it said would take several hours (but only took about 20 minutes -- some removals and upgrades and two installations that I did see between a coffee break and bathroom break), and, then, viola!, it did a normal boot [There's nothing like Ubuntu!]. At Ubuntu's behest, I restarted it.

However, I still have no driver that will enable desktop effects. Hardware Drivers says there are no proprietary drivers nor does it give me the option to ennable one.

What is the official NVIDIA driver?

I went to the Nvidia website -- just now. The website seems to know nothing about my graphics card! And it doesn't give me any response to "official driver." I'm not being facetious but I can show you:

search nvidia linux driver in google

paulsm4 09-27-2009 10:17 PM

Hi -

NVidia indeed supports your card:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html

As you can see from the link, you want the "1.0-71xx driver". It's available for your CPU/platform here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

'Hope that helps .. PSM

Sorry; I don't know enough to know what part is relevant and which isn't – hopefully, I'm working up to that. Well, okay, I'll give it shot:

Okay; Thank you very much, PaulsM4; much appreciated.

I see it listed at the first site you gave me; but couldn't find it in the downloads site. So I got it at
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?0jayjiqjwyq.

So, now it's sitting on my desktop; I haven't figured out how to install it yet, but I'm sure I'll get under the hood eventually.

pixellany 09-28-2009 07:57 AM

If it is what I am used to, the NVidia driver comes as a script---just run it, but without X running. Your system will have to be setup for compiling SW--eg that kernel headers must be installed.

The NVidia site has instructions.....
