how do I find the wine executable

I need to install a dll for wine to use. The posts say to drop it in the same file as the executable. I can find the executable by using search, but I cannot tell what directory it is in.

What do you mean "you can find it but you don't know what folder it is in"? If you find it, you can know everything about it. Probably it's in the ~/.wine folder, where there is a virtual c:\ directory and a directory called "program files".

The executable it means is the executable that you are running under wine.

For example, to run Oblivion.exe you need d3dx9blah.dll, copy this file into the folder where Oblivion.exe resides, then "wine Oblivion.exe"

Also, you could copy the dll to the system32 folder that is used in wine, which would be /home/yourusername/.wine/.../windows/system32
