How do I find my hard drive in Fdisk

'm installing Gentoo for the first time and I'm trying to use Fdisk to partition my hard drive. Let me tell you about my set up XP on a 500gig hd master sata port 1 and I want Gentoo on my raptor 150gig sata port 2. I cant seam to find my 150 gig hd I would think it would be /dev/sdb but it says access denied. What do I do to find that drive and partition it iv been going by the Gentoo manual with no luck?
