How do I download the KDE desktop (Kubuntu) when I already have Ubuntu v.12-10?
I would have dowloaded Kubuntu directly via wubi, but it wouldn't work. I read somewhere that you can download the KDE environment on Ubuntu anyway, so I went ahead and downloaded Ubuntu again.
Where do I go to download the environment? I checked the Ubuntu Software Center and I tried using a search engine, yet I come across no relevant results. Could somebody please give me a push in the right direction? |
I don't use ubuntu, but package names tend to be similar if not identical across Debian based distributions. Open up Synaptic Package Manager, and search by name for "kde". You should find in the results something like "kde-full" or, if not that, "kde-desktop[-environment]".

Back when I used Ubuntu, if I wanted to install the KDE desktop there was the kubuntu-desktop metapackage (on the repositories) which downloaded everything needed to turn Ubuntu into Kubuntu. I don't remember quite well, but it might also substitute some Ubuntu specific packages with the Kubuntu equivalents.

That's the online Ubuntu server that storages all the software you can install with the Software Center, Synaptic and apt-get. To install any package from there, you can execute Synaptic (if it's installed), press on the "Update" button, then enter the package name in the search box, hit enter and double click on the package name to install it.
If you don't have Synaptic installed (likely), you can use the Software Center, which is similar. |

To install KDE in Ubuntu just type in a terminal
Code:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop then log back in but click on the big white button next to your user name on the login screen and select Kubuntu See attached image showing the white button I am talking about Report results back Good luck to you |
Excellent. Exactly what I was looking for.
