how do i disable network manager ?

I cant connect to the internet thru a router using dchp, i have read that the network manager is fouled up and that i need to disable it. Can i do this with out uninstalling it?
also i was told to type this in to locate my ethernet card. "dhclient eth0"
This is what i got
dhclient

Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.1.2

can't create /var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.leases: Permission denied

Open a socket for LPF: Operation not permitted

Can anyone tell me something that would be helpful to connect to the internet?
