How do I determine the Linux Server Version using a console (puTTY)?

Hi Guys,

First of all I'm new to Linux. Our server uses a linux server which im not sure of if it is RedHat, Ubuntu.... etc. Question is.... what unix command should I use to find out the version.

Thanks in advanced.

I suggest trying some of the files in /etc. For example:
$ cat /etc/issue
Debian GNU/Linux lenny/sid \n \l
cheers, makyo

On most distros you can do
cat /etc/*-release
On Debian, Ubuntu and related distros you can use "cat /etc/issue" as mentioned above or do
cat /etc/lsb-release
