I tried:

What should i do next?? Please help me, I have been searching for the answer for so long now...:(

ifconfig merely tells you the IP address of your ethernet card, which you may or (more likely) may not need to know to connect to the internet.

The solution depends an awful lot on how you want to connect to the internet - dial-up connections, always-on connections and connecting through a gateway on a LAN all have very different setup procedures, so before going any further it'd help if you described your setup (and the make of your modem in the first two cases).
