My video seems to be a bit sluggish, and I'm worried that my drivers for my graphics card are not working/installed. I heard that debian etch -- my distro -- automatically installs all the drivers I need, but how can I make sure that it has installed these ones? I downloaded the drivers from the ATI website just in case, but even when I try to run them as root, I get "Permission Denied."

So, please help... 1) How can I check to see that my hardware (in general) is properly installed, and 2) If it turns out it's not, how do you go about installing drivers for linux?

lsmod will show you which is loaded on your system.

As for installing driver on Linux, it's depend on the vendor of the hardware. They should have a readme file that will show you step-by-step to install the driver.
