How do I change the desktop environment in Debian?

Hello,

I'm running Debian "sarge" kernelversion 2.4

I would like to switch from gnome to fluxbox and to other environments like kde. I did the "apt-get install fluxbox" but my problem is that when I kill X with "ctrl+alt+f1" and try the "startfluxbox" It tells me that it must have X running. So I do "initx" and of course it brings gnome up... :(

What should I do to run X without bringing gnome up? And to configure which default desktop environment to have upon boot?

Thank you.

You will need to edit your .xinitrc file to load Fluxbox (or whatever other WM you want to use).

If you don't have this file, then you can simply create it. Take a look at this short guide.

Ok I did up to this point where he instructs the following:

Quote:

One thing i like about Debian is that it comes with the 'Debian menu',
click on it and again on Window Managers and Fluxbox should be there.
Click on Flubox and it switch to it in a jiffy, unless you're on Gnome
or KDE, then it won't.
Which is my case.
