I did not quite get your issue. Are you trying to boot into windows while running linux? Or are you trying to read files from a windows disk? Normally it is not possible to start another operating system from another one.

reading the title i would say you need emulation (virtualbox, qemu, vmware, ...)

is there any reason why dual-boot wont work ?

It will help if you avoid the run-on sentences, and use caps, punctuation, etc.

Please clarify your configuration including the type of computer, what is installed, etc. (eg: Do you have a CD drive?)

well

im running a computer that has ubuntu installed. i would like to run a windows disk while ubuntu is running. so then i can install windows. i cannot run it during the boot ( for reasons i would not like to get into). so i would like to run the startup.exe file on the windows disk so that i may install windows on the computer and remove ubuntu.

If you want to install a Winblows OS, why don't you ask Micro$oft how to do it? That's what you're paying them for isn't it?

Using Linux to get rid of Linux - in exchange for Windows???

I don't think this has been done before.

mahuvi 03-17-2010 07:58 PM

just restart from ubuntu during restart time you 'll see multiple selection booting system windows or ubuntu then select windows

Im not dual booting

im not daul booting the computer only has ubuntu on it and im trying to get windows on it

jefro 03-17-2010 09:03 PM

One of three ways. One is use live cd such as barts. Second is to use a virtual machine. Third is to create a dual boot system.
In all cases you would need a legal copy of xp to begin with.

Sorry to see there are some posts here that are not helpful.

Do you have a CD drive? If so, simply boot up with the Windows CD and run the installer.

I don't know what you are saying here.

I don't think that is going to work.

If it's an official Windows installation/recovery disk, your only option is to boot it from the CD/DVD drive.

Hi -

I'm a bit new to Ubuntu. My netbook has Ubuntu installed, but I would like to install Windows instead. I have a Windows CD. Do I need to run "setup.exe" from the Windows CD in order to do this?
A:
No. All you need to do is boot from the Windows CD. This will run "setup" automatically. It will also allow you to reformat the entire disk with Windows, completely removing Ubuntu.

PS:
That's a good suggestion. But I got the distinct impression the OP expected to be able to run his Windows "setup.exe" from a Linux prompt. Which generally doesn't work ;)
