how do i activate my wireless on debian

i am using debian lenny and i wish to use the wireless how do i go about it? it is saying that the wi-fi i am using has a non-free software that i should needed

Add the non-free repository to your package manager's sources list.

For example, in /etc/apt/sources.list you would change lines such as
deb http://whatever/debian lenny main
deb-src http://whatever/debian lenny main
deb http://whatever/debian lenny main contrib non-free
deb-src http://whatever/debian lenny main contrib non-free
Then update your local package list:
sudo aptitude update
There's certainly some way to do this in the GUI, too.
