Do you wish to play MP3s on your Linux system.

Well, If u wanna use windows apps, then wine is the thing. To get wine, u can download the source or the RPM. (RPM recommended if u're a newbie). After installing wine, here's how u use it:
Lets assume u want to run "abc.exe" thats in "d:\baka\abc.exe" in windows.
Firstly, the windows parition should be mounted. (Ask if u dont know how). lets say u have mounted it in /mnt/windoze in linux. So, open a terminal, and "cd /mnt/windoze/baka". Then type "wine abc.exe".
If wine is able to wine this file, then u're lucky, otherwise it'll give some errors, then u're unlucky :p
If u wanna play MP3s on your system, try software such as XMMS. XMMS is very similar to Winamp in windows. U could also try Xine or something.

thanks akudewan...........see i have the XMMS with me but it does nt play my mp3 files......it doesnt even move when i add afile.....the most funniest thing is that i cannot add files to my play list...............

what linux distribution are you using? fedora diables mp3 playback by default. you have to get the mp3 codec, i forget the name right now, and install that and disable the plugin in xmms that is in there to block mp3 playback.

this is one of the reasons i quit using fedora. i don't want cripple-ware, if I did I'd keep using M$.

sounds to me like it would make a lot more sense to troubleshoot the xmms problem than go messing about with wine. Does your system produce any sound at all?

I suggest going to this site http://www.xmms.org and download the tar.gz version of the software, then follow the instruction on how to install the software from source. You can also download the rpm from there as the rpm from this site doesn't disable mp3 support. But installing from source is a better method. Btw what distro do you use? It is easier for people to figure out what is your real problem if you give your distro name.

Xmms plays mp3's fine for me with slackware.

my sound works wen tested in sound card detector in redhat 9
but the mp3 cannot be played

nothing moves in the player and cannot even include a file in the playlist

I dont think red hat supports MP3.

I am also brand new to linux (fedora 2) and I had the same situation. There is a site that lists tips and tricks for fedora core and it included a link to an RPM which installed the codecs for MP3 play, once that was installed correctly I could add files and play them.

I will check to see if I can find the link.

Anyone out there know about playing CD's on XMMS?

Redhats DO support mp3 but you have to download separate file for mp3 support. It can be downloaded easily from http://freshrpms.net. But I think the easiest way to have mp3 is to remove xmms installation from your Redhat and install the rpm from xmms official website.

even I think wine-ing is a bad idea. Solving the XMMS problem is the best thing u can do.
Well...try doing this in XMMS.
Open the preferences window, then in the Plugins window, make sure you are using a proper output plugin. Try downloading other plugins from xmms.org

If nothing works, you may need to recompile the kernel. (I had to recompile the kernel when using fedora)

Mp3 isn't by default supported in Red Hat distribution. There is an rpm that can be downloaded, and after installing mp3's work just fine.... was the case for me in FC2.

For RH9 it should be the following rpm file: xmms-mp3-1.2.7-21.p.i386.rpm (Someone correct me if I'm wrong)

try to search for it on freshrpms.net or similar...

this will solve the problem I think...
