Question how can I understand whether a program installed or not installed?

Hi,

I don't know when I take somethg from dselect and then if it was installed or not? For example I have taken samba form source CD's and everything what I need also too for samba. And I am trying to run Swat but comes nothing..

And then I had a doubt ,might be samba was not configured or not installed in properly..

How can I find out if a software was in proper way installed or not?

Thanks

Emin

My system: debian-"woody"

If its an RPM you can type rpm -q thename.rpm
If it isn't it's probably installed if you compiled it, type this
find / -name <program you want to see if its installeds name>
That will show you any file with the name you search for.

I have found it...

When write

$dlocate -s samba

it gives all about it, if its installed, or runs or smthg els. about it..

it seems that dlocate much easier then dpkg command.

so, may be it helps whom are looking for too.
