How can I tell which Distro I have?

Hey All,
I have done some research on how to see which distro is in use, but most of the solutions required rebooting. As I am a production server, how can tell which distro I have without rebooting. Coorect If I am wrong, uname -a will only display the kernel type right?
Thanks alot in advance..

If it's a debian you can find out with this: cat /etc/*version* && ls -l /etc |grep version
Don't know which distros it works on though.
