gedit was probably in /usr/bin
the gnome libs were probably in /usr/lib
it would be hard to delete a directory and just mess up gedit and not
mess up a bunch of other stuff. if kde is working, you can run
kpackage.
it was a bizarro directory like ORBit or some such thing that you wouldn't think would affect it... in fact, it was in a temp directory.
let me show my true colors here... it IS Mandrake. how do you go about uninstalling and reinstalling it with the mandrake control center?
gedit works in other user profiles, just not under his anymore. right now, he's trying to move all his profile stuff and create another user and import the stuff back in... hope he doesn't run out of space.
