how can i move this folder of music from /root/Shared to /home/coffee/Shared ? thx

Hello everyone. I used limewire to download some music files they said they were in /root/Shared but i can't get to them unless i'm in command line, when i su to superuser. is there a way for me to move that folder to /home/coffee/Shared
with command line? Thank you!

Read 'man mv' and while your at it 'man chown' minus the single quotemakes.

tahnks! it worked i just used:
[root@x1-6-00-50-8d-d1-c1-97 coffee]# mv /root/Shared /home/coffee/Shared

didn't need the chown

I hope you're not using the root account for your normal computer activities. You should have a normal user account for everyday stuff. root is only used for installing software, configuring the system, etc.

stress, i don't, i use a normal user named coffee, i then su to root to do stuff, like access locked paritions like /root, thats why i had to su to root to move those files.

Mr. Coffee: Those files would never have ended up in /root/Shared unless you had been running limewire as root. This is because the /root directory has permissions of rwx------, which means only root can access/write to it. Stress_junkie is right - be very careful about what you do as root!

I thought that you must have run limewire as root. I'm glad that you usually use a normal account. I couldn't reconcile where you said you use su to get to the files, which showed that you use a normal account, with the fact that the files ended up under the root login directory, indicating that you had run limewire as root (as tredegar pointed out). I figured that maybe when limewire was installed only root could run it. That can happen when permissions are set incorrectly on an application's files.

ohhh i had no idea...See i thought u had to be root to install new programs and moidfy the system. Like if i try to change a .configure file, i have to always su to root before saving the file, such as a file that is in /etc parition. So when i install somthing like a ./configure like i did with limewire, i thought i had to be as root to install. No wonder those files got thrown into that /root directory i had no idea, lol i wonder how many other programs are in there

If you do the same types of things as root, you could set up sudo.

You only need to be root to do the 'make install' - everything else can be done as a user.
