How can I make my WD external hard drive work with Linux?

I just plugged my drive into this computer but it does not open the drive. Says there's an error. It's a Western Digital 1TB.

I also plugged in my camera to see if that would work and it works fine with F-spot so I don't need to load the camera's software.

Reason I'm experimenting is that I'm wanting to do away with the XP that is currently on my laptop and replace it with Linux. I posted a thread on here about it a few weeks ago regarding compatibility. Now, the only thing I have left to make happen is the WD ext drive. If I can get that to work, I'll be good to go.
Thank you.

Well what's the error you are getting? You need to be more specific with your problem.

Cheers,

Josh

How did you plug it? On a SATA slot or USB port?

"Says there's an error"? What error? You will have to be more specific.

Is it formatted? How do you know? Have you been able to use it with another operating system? Run these commands in Linux and check the output:

Code:
% su -
(enter password)
# fdisk -l
If it's USB, run this command:
Code:
# lsusb
