How can I install the 2.5.66 kernel in Redhat 9.0 - wheres the kernel?!
 

I recently installed Redhat 9.0 and am going about setting up my computer under linux for the first time, but I could not get my onboard lan to work.

(I have a Gigabyte 8KNXP motherboard which has a gigabit lan onboard)

So I was reading around and found that the drivers for the lan chip thats on my mobo have recently been implemented in the new kernel.

So I looked at plenty of How-To's and guides on how to install a new kernel. I have downloaded 2.5.66 from kernel.org and I unbzip2'd it. But now as all the guides tell me I should be putting it in a directory called /usr/src/linux.

But there is no such dir called /usr/src/linux.

There is:
/usr/src/debug
/usr/src/redhat

This is driving me crazy as all the guides say there should be /usr/src/linux. Even the Redhat website says there is a dir called /usr/src/linux-2.4.

But theres nothing there of that name at all.
I have a /boot partition if that matters. I dont really know too much about this at all (as you can probably tell). Somone please tell me how to install a new kernel in Redhat 9.0.

you need to install the kernel sources rpm. goto rpmfind.net and search for it or it will be on the cd's.

dont install the 2.5.x kernels. all the kernels with odd second digit are beta kernels, they are there just for the purpose testing

What are these RPM's you speak of? and what is their purpose? Will they enable me to install the new kernel?

I have to install the new kernel otherwise I wont have any internet... and a computer without internet... well what good is that anyway?

Or are you saying its better to wait for the 2.6 kernel and just sling linux in the hedge in the meantime?

Installing the RedHat kernel sources will make that /usr/src/linux-2.4 directory, and the /usr/src/linux link to it.
If you're sure your drivers need the utterly latest 2.5.x kernel then you'll have to get it, but they really should be designed for 2.4.x, or maybe a newbie like you should wait for 2.6

The hardest part about getting used to Linux is learning its naming conventions and OS structure.

And on another note does anyone know why all the apps for Linux have such weird names. Like 'The Gimp' for example?

it's called a sense of humour. gimp = GNU Image Manipulation Program afaik.
