Any ordinary user account (even your own) shouldn't be able to access anything that'll damage your system. Only the root account should have that access, and you should almost never be running as root.

Of course. I don't use root privileged unless I need to. But I wanted to give them their own user acc to keep my home dir safe as well (along with thousands of configuration files in it :O ).

When I was younger, I was an in-your-face evangelist for British motorcycles. I grew to care less and less till I no longer think about it. I no longer care about what is popular or smart, I just like people, and I am into helping them given an opportunity but otherwise just enjoy what works for me.

Thus i interpret that as saying that looking at Cloned Windows and Slackware , its a case of "the lesser of two evils".

I was tempted to ask on Slackware forum why there was no nod of Acknowledgment to Gnu and call Slackware Linux , Slackware GNU/Linux instead then thought better of it !

I think an important takeaway here is when someone offers to sell you something, listen. Decide. Don't avoid them and hide your head in the sand. Some evangelists are selling the real deal, even if their presentation is bad. Don't miss out. Most people do.

and there is a pragmatic problem PureOS looked a likely candidate then , my wifi wasn't recognized . I did some googling and answers were something like "add the none free repo" which seems to defeat the point.

You don't. You applaud them for using the tools that work best for them.

A computer is a tool. Use what's best for you. Use what best allows *you* to get *your* work done.

I use Linux because it's the best tool for me and for what I do. I'm not some opensource zealot. I don't care if the code is proprietary. I simply care that it works, and that's what Linux does for me. It just works - for me.

You mercilessly shame them. Shaming is one of the most powerful ways to get people to do something for you. In fact, it's so powerful that, on an almost global scale, people are vying to get the lion share of this power while depriving others of it.

Of course it's kind of scummy to do that, but, it works.

Point right at their face and laugh at them, laugh at them for being a pleb who still doesn't use Linux in 2020. Laugh. Laugh at them every single second, humiliate them mercilessly, especially with peer pressure, if you can do that then they'll be installing Gentoo before you can say "Sorry bro, it was just a prank".

I think it would be better for us to convert you into a developer for the cause?

Hmmmm. People running Win 7 seem like excellent candidates for Linux to me. Especially if that machine started as XP. They're the ones gunna be the most amazed at the drastic improvement.

edit: I read the article. Ok yeah near the end there is a valid point. It's only worth it if you wanna spend the time messing with it. Buying a Chromebook would be a lot easier for many people and save them a lot of time. But if they like playing with computers, then it's fun, and certainly more useful than a chromebook. I automatically assumed the person using win7 can't afford or doesnt want to buy an expensive new computer so didn't consider those options (which he listed twice, windows & mac). They could just buy a cheap hub for their android phone and hook up their old monitor/keyboard/mouse too, probably be better than win7 and as good as chromebook.
