How can I get 'software updates' in Xubuntu 16.04LTS to appear in the toolbar?

I just fresh installed Xubuntu 16.04LTS and rather than having the software updates appear in the toolbar (like they do on a different computer that also runs Xubuntu 16.04LTS), the computer just flashes a little window that software updates are available. Then I go to the software updater and run 'check for updates' and install them. Easy enough but it is pretty easy to miss that little window notifying me there are updates. Is there any way to go back to getting the update notification in a little tab on the toolbar? Thanks.

If Apper is installed? It's settings can configure notifications.

Is this not some kind of setting in the Update Manager itself to have the icon appearing in the taskbar?

Thanks nomko. I'm not on that computer. I'll check it in the morning.

If your package manager does not have that setting like Nomko suggests you could install Apper or try: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...7/#post5553977

Thanks nomko. The updates were being downloaded and installed automatically--that's why I didn't see the update notices. And so I went to my other computer and changed the setting from "display immediately" to "download and install automatically." So that's good. Both computers are the same now and I won't have to watch for update notices.
