How can I change the Debian boot sequence from the Root Terminal?

Hi, I have an old desktop computer running on a version of Debian that my brother installed online, and I want wipe out that version and install from the CD either Debian or XP, but the machine does not read the CD drive when rebooted; how can I change the Debian boot sequence from the Root Terminal, so the machine reads the CD drive first?

Thank you in advance.

You need to enter the BIOS and set the CD to boot first before the hard disk. If that still doesn't work (some old machines don't boot from CD), then you need to install a different boot manager like Smart Boot Manager, that has a boot from CD option. lilo and grub-legacy do not offer boot from CD options.

Why don't you just dist-upgrade the Debian install to the new stable release? Do you know what version of Debian it is (try cat /etc/debian_version at a command prompt)?

Also, what are the specs on the machine?
