First thing I would say stay with gnome desktop it is the simply the best.
Any ways if u want to switch you have to download lots of data first, lets take a look at different methods. 1. If you have a kubuntu alternate cd which is diffrent from desktop cd,then insert it and synaptic package manger will be automatically open and choose kubuntu-desktop package from list and install it. 2. Below the list of packages is given,u can install it by "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-default-settings",this is my suggestion it will give u a required look of kde if u r looking for the kde look, otherwise choose from below packages. (i) 'kubuntu-desktop' -- This is the recommended metapackage to install; the full Kubuntu installation, with all the Kubuntu recommended packages. This includes LibreOffice, Kontact, Konversation, Amarok, K3B, and others. (ii) 'kde-full' -- This will install the following KDE packages: kdegames, kdeaccessibility, kdeaddons, kdeadmin, kdeartwork, kdegraphics, kdemultimedia, kdenetwork, kdepim, kdesdk, kdeutils, kdewebdev, and the kde-plasma-desktop metapackage (see details below). (iii) 'kde-plasma-desktop' --- This will install the core -- the bare-minimum required-- of KDE. That is, kdebase-apps, kdebase-runtime, kdebase-workspace and kdm. If you choose to not install kubuntu-desktop, then you can still get all the Kubuntu-specific tweaks by installing the 'kubuntu-default-settings' package. |
You seem to be using redhat or one of its clones (You need to mention your distro anyway). If so, run
Code:
yum grouplist | less Code:
yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)" |
some system information would HELP
from the red hat logo under your name this is RHEL .But what RHEL version is it ????????? most likely the ONLY kde you can install is the very old KDE3.5 it is in the rhel5.6 repos ( rhn) on RHEL6.1 KDE 4.3.4 is in the reops please use your PAID FOR support and ask red hat http://www.redhat.com/support/ if this is RHEL6 then the "groupinstall" that "saivnoba" is wrong if 6.1 it is Code:

One more option, you can use, switchdesk utility from terminal, as:
% switchdesk kde Then logout/login to apply changes. |
