Hotplugging USB, CUPS, and printers

This seems pretty basic so I thought I'd stick it in this forum.

I've never been much into hardware, and don't quite understand the nuances of hotplugging and USB. With a USB printer, what (if anything) has to be turned off before plugging in the cable (printer, computer) to avoid possible damage? If it's fine to have them both on while moving the cable around, do you just need to restart CUPS after plugging it in to use the printer? I ask because my main system is a laptop I have at school, and it's not going to be workable to have it always plugged into the printer.

Thanks in advance.

One of the intents of USB was to have a hotplug-safe system. I routinely plug in USB devices with the computer running. I think it would be safe to just plug and try to print. :)

Sounds good, thanks. :)

Hotplug Printers

Btw, at least on Fedora Core 3, every time I turn a printer on/off I have to run /usr/sbin/system-config-printer and re-add it beforfe I can print. Just an FYI in case you run into the same situation.

Bon Chance!
