Hotmail problems
 

I am having problems with Hotmail recently. I connect to Windows Live and sign in and it doesnt remember my name althoug I have put an X in the box "remember me". When I enter up pops a message saying Update your web browser to the latest version. I have the latest Mozill installed so I have to click on continue.... I enter my emails and when I go to write anything I can put in the address and the subject, but can't continue. Does anyone know why this is happening. Someone on Ubuntu mentionned something about User Agent and the fact I was using Linux which wasn't being recognised.

I'm having similar trouble with hotmail.

The "remember me" thing could be because you might be clearing your cookies everytime you close your browser with some sort of automatic "clear private data" selection.

The "not being able to type into the body of the letter" thing seems to be Microsoft screwing with Linux users. Hotmail works fine from a windows based computer.

All the fixes I found refer to going back to an older way of doing things. Unfortunately this is no longer an option.

Good luck, I'd like to know the answer to this one too...

I haven't heard anything good about this topic, and I'm going to try and refrain from windows bashing, but the easy and painful way is to move to gmail or yahoo or any of the other free emails offered. I'm not up to speed with wine and IE, but in the end, which is easier? Setting all that up or sending out an email to all of your friends that you've changed email addys? Sucks, but we're seeing it happen on the MS stuff more and more.

a couple of things you can try, download the user agent switcher from firefox add-ons and let your browser show up as internet explorer. If you are using iceweasel go to your address bar and type in about:config (there will be a warning dialog first) then in the search bar type in iceweasel change the the part in the line (highlight the line and right click-modify) Iceweasel/3.0.3 to Firefox/3.0.3 (or whatever version you are running--you should update to the newest version anyway!)There were some reports that iceweasel was having problems with some web sites and the changes here were to fix that problem.

Yes, the user agent setting is the one that you need to change. I am using FF3 on Fedora and having same issues, yet to find the right string to put for the User Agent :(

Microsoft will continue to frustrate Linux users. Any fix will be temporary. It is better to look into other solutions, such as using something other than Hotmail. If enough people migrate then Microsoft will start to lose advertising revenue which is not part of their plan.

However, the determined Linux user can always beat Microsoft at its own game. It all depends on the degree to which you are willing to go. Easiest solution has been provided (using user agent). Next would be to use Wine and install IEs4linux at http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page. I hate this solution, but will post it as most people use Wine for at least something. In installing IEs4linux don't do it as root. This is a sure sign that something is wrong with the world when you start installing things not as root, but it is the only way his script works. A third solution is to try another browser in Wine such as Chromium from http://www.codeweavers.com/services/ports/chromium/ or even Safari (Windows version) installs in Wine. For the really Windows obsessed you can install Windows in a VM such as VirtualBox and everything will work because you will be in Windows (but inside a Linux host).

Best solution: don't use Hotmail and tell Microsoft to stick it for shafting its own users.

when asked if you Promise not to damage or some such, click OK or dismiss the box

in the 'url' line, type

general.

don't miss the period

Search down the short list for the line ending in Ubuntu

Double click that line. Type the word:

Firefox

don't forget the capital.

go back to Hotmail.

You must do this, EVERYDAY.

Thanks, works like charm in Fedora too. The exact string I suppose is "general.useragent.vendor".

I did something similar. Using Suse Linux 9.2, Opensuse 10.3. Mandriva 2008, and a couple of other distros; open Firefox, enter 'about:config', enter 'agent' in filter box and look for entries with the word 'vendor' in them. Right click on the 'vendor' line(s), click on modify and when the pop up window opens, I deleted the entry. Works on all above distros. I'd suggest keeping track of what you change in this method so you can go back if it doesn't work for you.

I noticed that using hotmail with Slackware 11.0 and Ubuntu 7.04 there was no problem with Firefox so I did not make any changes. I did go through the above process and noticed there were not entries for 'vendor' when I entered filter name agent!
