That sounds like a pretty plain vanilla set up and obviously you've come up with something else but you make me curious. What was the nature of the failure? My gut is telling me the there may be some conflict the ethernet adapter. I ask because it might help me to further my understanding.

Don't let the bugs hit your bumper.

I'm an invalid (left side stroke), and my RazPi is downstairs as a media box. I have a router which works just fine as a router. I got Protonvpn and put it on my pc, and the RazPi; The idea was to get the hotspot on the vpn, so the house would have it, but I've 10 connections with the package. So it slid down the priority list. I tried it, but it landed in jammy side down. Once I asked the question "Do I have to do this?", progress stopped.

That sounds like a pretty standard setup. You have me curious though. What was the nature of the failure? Do you still have a copy of your config file? My gut is telling me that there might be a conflict with the adapters themselves. I ask because it might help me advance my understanding.

Around these parts we have a saying related to a local phenomena you might get a kick out of. We have a species of small marsh fly. I don't know the proper name but most folk call them "love bugs" or "mosques calientes" (hot flies) in Spanish because once sometimes twice a season they have a mating swarm. I have personally seen swarms that must have numbered millions. Imagine driving through a swarm like that and you'll know why we say,

Don't let the bugs hit your bumper.

Wow I feel for you brother. It doesn't seem to have taken your wits which is good. This year I was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma, a cancer of the smooth muscle cells. I'm in remission now but the prognosis is not good. So I took early retirement and started playing with my computer. I decided I didn't care to spend my last years working. It's ironic. I have a good company pension I can draw on at age 65. I wonder if I'll make it.

Yeah, there was major hassle with the usb wifi dongles, because Realtek don't provide linux support. Here's the config file
Code:
dec@SparrowFart:~$ cat /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf
# the wireless interface
interface=wlan2
# the driver -- there are other settings possible, but very likely the following works
driver=nl80211
logger_syslog=-1
logger_syslog_level=2
logger_stdout=-1
logger_stdout_level=2
dump_file=/tmp/hostapd.dump
ctrl_interface=/var/run/hostapd
ctrl_interface_group=0
# The SSID -- i.e. the name of the wireless network (which will be shown when you scan for available networks)
ssid=Chateau_Dec
#country_code=IE
# check the manpage for hostapd and your hardware for the mode
hw_mode=g
channel=32
beacon_int=100
dtim_period=2
max_num_sta=255
rts_threshold=2347
fragm_threshold=2346
macaddr_acl=0
auth_algs=3
ignore_broadcast_ssid=0
eapol_key_index_workaround=0
eap_server=0
own_ip_addr=127.0.0.1
wpa=1
# The WPA2 key
# wpa_passphrase=<Trimmed out & witheld>
wpa_psk=<long string of numbers not posted for security>
# the next settings refer to the settings in the clients wpa_supplicant.conf
wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
wpa_pairwise=TKIP
rsn_pairwise=CCMP
dec@SparrowFart:~$
The setup chosen was:
  • Powerline network adapter connecting to router via eth0
  • Hotspot should be available on wlan2
  • Network forwarding enabled (/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forwarding=1)

I hadn't got enough into it to bend the dhcp bit of it straight. BTW the stroke left me with my memory and my marbles.I got epilepsy from a bang on the head at 13, and lived with it all along. Then the stroke hit the bit of the brain that had already been damaged. If I'd known....

EDIT: The nature of the failure was that I couldn't see any dhcp server.
