Cool Hopefully a Simple Question

I am trying to install a program on my Mandrake 9.0 machine. When I attempt to run the configure script "./configure" I get the following error message:

"configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH"

then it drops me right back to my command line prompt.

My question: what can I do and how do I do it?

(I realize that this is yet ANOTHER elementry question...but I am REALLY green when it comes to Linux.

Many thanks.

you need to install gcc, (gnu compiler collection).

actually, I have one more.

When trying to compile gcc-3.2.1 I get an error that reads:

"You must set the encironment variable CC to a working compiler."

I thought that I was installing a working compiler....I guess I don't yet understand the chain of events that must take place in order to install ANYTHING quite yet...

Can you shed any light?

you shouldn't have to compile the compiler, it's an rpm on your mandrake disks. open mandrakes package manager(rpm drake?) and search for gcc.
