Home dir gone!?

Ok, i just checked my home directory,...and it's gone....is there anyway I can recover it!?

The obvious reply is not a good news.

You can't.

I think we'll need just a bit more detail.....

What were you doing before is disappeared?

Is the system running?

What happens if you re-boot?

In principle, things can be recovered using something like testdisk or photorec. If you had any really valuable data, the don't do anything that would cause a write to the disk (including rebooting)

Yes you can---see my post.

I think I deleted it as root...

You are right.

It's just that's harder to explain how to use this kind of software, than giving the official linux reply. And you have no 100% success.

As you know, for example for ext4 the official reply is, you can't.

I made a short reply, sorry :)

If that's really true---AND if there is valuable data---then get the drive to a professional recovery service.

Otherwise:

The other good option, if there is no valuable data, is to simply re-install.

OK, but how do i download and run it via command line?

There are instructions at the site (I don't remember any details)

testdisk is available using my package manager (in Arch). it might be for your distro also.
