Hiragana/Kanji input on a Bosnian keyboard

Hi there!

Since I've started to learn Japanese lately, I wanted to enable jp input
somehow. I added jp_UTF-8 and jp_EU (or something similar) to the locales.
Since I use Fluxbox and didn't want to bother doing it manually,
I ran kcontrol (KDE's control centre) and set up kxkb (the little applet
that gives you the ability to switch keyboard layouts on your toolbar)
to run via .xsessiox.

This runs fine, but I can only input latin characters and katakana
when holding the right Alt button (called AltGr on my keyboard).
I had no luck inputting hiragana or kanji :(

1. How do I switch to hiragana/kanji? I've seen Japanese keyboards and
they seem to have some additional buttons which I think would switch
from one sort of characters to the others. Can I, although not having
them, somehow implement them using eg. xev and then mapping them with
hotkeys?

2. If I type hiragana, will it be converted to kanji automatically, like
on the cellphone?

TNX a lot! :)

EDIT: I use Debian Etch, Fluxbox. I'm an intedmediate user, so I
don't mind using xev, editting scripts and the like to make this
work.

Take a look at Smart Common Input Method (SCIM) http://www.scim-im.org/
There are six different methods of japanese input. I don't use it, so I can't provide any details, sorry.
Chances are, that SCIM may be in Debian repositories (it is in Kubuntu 7.04)

Tets :)
