hi ,
I am using opera 11.50
I am surprised at its horrible rendition of hindi websites.
firefox 3.6.10 did well.
Attached image compares the two browsers.
I am using windows xp.
I am unable to find any solution for opera.
which entry should I edit in opera:config ?(i guess ,it pertains to one of following : author display mode , css generic font family , fonts , user display mode , user prefs)

Two browsers seem to be using different fonts. One needs to check whether browsers use system fonts or they have their own settings. Have you tried the two browsers in linux- whether they display the same page differently? Also can you provide the link to this web page.
I will check behaviour of opera in ubuntu or debian virtual machine.
BTW , I had simply searched hindi website on google which gave first result :- http://agoodplace4all.com/
I checked hindi font (by typing in google search) in 3 browsers in ubuntu: firefox, chrome and konqueror (I could not find opera in synaptic software center). Each gave slightly different appearance. Further there are font settings in the preferences in each where one can change the settings. So, one needs to adjust the appearance thru browser preferences for optimal results.
I changed font to 'akshar unicode' in tools>preferences>webpages . Yet hindi in xp version is not satisfactory . It isn't the case of missing unicode characters but the way to combine them.
You are saying that opera in ubuntu is alright but not in windows xp. Try checking the font settings in opera-ubuntu and making the same in opera-windows xp. What about other hindi fonts like mangal and devnagiri? I believe akshar is the best.
In ubuntu : normal & monospace fonts are set as deja vu serif , deja vu sans mono by default.
Applying same for xp does not make any difference though xp version is 11.50 (very recent) while ubuntu version is 11.11
as for comparison between opera & firefox
i want to turn images on or off for any tab.
In firefox I used an addon 'imagelikeopera' . Opera has inbuilt button for that.
Also I don't want flash or gif animation to autostart. In firefox I used another addon while changing config in opera does same.
though , I am using old firefox . It seems unresponsive in slow connection. While opera indicates status of web page downloading , which is assuring.
