hideous looking fonts in opera
 

When I am typing i.e. like typing this post, the font that is being typed looks fine, but all the background fonts on the page look "blocky" and are so small as to be virtually unreadable.

Yes, I can "zoom" to maybe 150% but I suspect that I have got something set incorrectly.

I am using Opera 6.1 (linux/gnu) shared Qt version for mandrake 9.0.

The font under the navigation buttons is still blocky but being a little larger, is readable. Under the buttons, it look about 12 or 13, on web pages, it looks about 6 to 8 (tiny).

does any one have any idea what I need to check or change to make visited webpages look correct ???

What you'll want to install are the Microsoft TT core fonts... I checked out Opera before installing them and yes, it looked bad!

Try the instructions here: http://corefonts.sourceforge.net

Installation should be flawless and you'll notice a huge difference.

Thanks for the link g0dzuki, the only problem now is to be able to decypher the instructions in the link.

I printed off the link to be able to follow it but as is a lot of things with this linux "lark" I end up with my pet hate, documentation.

From the n00b, point of view, vvv difficult to follow, just from the link for example, I can't tell if I need the core fonts, cab extract and the font files, etc etc. I have had too many disasters with linux since starting hence any pointers that you may be able to offer would be much appreciated.

You'll need the cab file: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/c...6.rpm?download

and the corefonts: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/c....spec?download


double-click on the cabextract RPM to install it.

Go to the console.

type "su" and then enter the root passwd.

type "rpmbuild -bb msttcorefonts-1.3-2.spec" at your shell (from the dir you downloaded to. Also, be connected to the internet, the installer will download some files.

next type "rpm -ivh /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/noarch/msttcorefonts-1.3-2.noarch.rpm"

finally, type "/sbin/service xfs restart".

leave out the quotes when you do the above, btw.

That should do it... Go into Mozilla/Opera or what ever and choose your fonts... you'll have arial, verdana, all that good stuff.

I got as far as typing the rpmbuild etc etc and all It would give me is rpmbuild :command not found

What do I need to do about that please ???

hmmm...rpmbuild installs by default under RedHat but maybe different if your using Mandrake. Try using 'rpm -ba' instead.

Look on your Mandrake CDs, you might have to install it from there.

From a shell you could also type 'rpm' and then hit 'tab' twice to see if you have something similar.
