Hi, what is the difference between a pentiumM processor and a P4
Hi I am new to the site and am not particularly good at understanding some of the terminoligy used for operating systems
EG. I have quite an old laptop using an XP OS with an Intel(R)Pentium(R)M processor, 1400MHz 1.40GHz,with 504 MB of RAM,and with Service Pack 3. (this info was taken off the system properties info) I have recently been given a new HD Digital camera which needs a Pentium 4 or above on Windows XP for the software to work. As I said I'm not very good with this sort of thing so have searched for information about the subject, but not had much luck so far understanding the terminoligy used. That's how I came to this website. So I would be very grateful if anyone could please explain to me in plain english what the difference is between these two OS, also if my laptop system is compatable with a pentium 4 or not is it more or less that a pentium 4. Many thanks for your help anyone. Regards YvonneF |
Welcome to Linux Questions.
Membership Introductions isn't the right forum for asking questions. You might want to click on the Report button and ask it be moved to General. ---- It may have more to do with the clock speeds of Pentium III era computers not being fast enough, than any particular feature. The pentium M came later, so there shouldn't be any MMX features you are missing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_M |

Hi,
to view the exact differences between Pentium 4 and Pentium M take a look at http://ark.intel.com. |

After hitting the wall of power-consumption with the Pentium 4 (130 W and more) Intel had to give up the Netburst architecture of these chips. They designed a new architecture roughly based on the Pentium 3 and earlier designs, this time with power efficiency in mind. The first processor of this architecture was the Pentium M, which could be much lower clocked to achieve the same computing power than the Pentium 4. Intel developed this design further into the Core and Core 2 designs. So your processor should be powerfull enough and shouldn't lack any important feature to run your program.
Regarding your OS, I think you want to know the difference between Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 3? Well there isn't a real difference, Service Pack 3 was the last big update-pack for Windows XP. However, I wonder why you come to a Linux forum with this questions. |
