Hi, TOTAL newbee, needs help with a few things
 

Hi all,

Thanks for taking the time to read my post,

first of all, I am a complete newbee. As in 2 days of using linux. My brother knows alot about linux but he cant help me (army).

I use redhat 9

my problem is,

Mozzila web browser.

when I go to veiw a webpage its fast and quick,
but when I go to view a webpage with pictures on it, it just takes FOREVER!!!! :(
I need to know if im doing something wrong, or if I just need to configure something, etc.

I dont know if theres another type of web browser on linux or not :/

Also

I cant play MP3s, it tells me redhats in a legal bind or something and cannot play the mp3s sorry for the inconvienence. I tried to download REALPLAYER for linux and it made it a file extension .BIN

I try to open it and it says natuilus has no veiwer capable of reading:

is there some type of place I can go to get a Mp3 player? :cry:

Also,

Is there any way in redhat linux to execute windows files, .exe and so forth that is not accepted with linux besides using WINE?

My bro said that wine is HORRIBLE and boggs your system down and makes it like running 2 computers multitasking into 1 comp. :/

if someone could please somewhat tell me in detail what to do if you have the time,

It's pretty hard to determine what's slowing down Mozilla without knowing anything about your system or connection speed. It could be alot of things. However, there are a lot of browser's for Linux. Firebird (stripped down mozilla), Opera, Konqueror, Netscape, etc etc.

RedHat doesn't ship with MP3 support (legal issues), but you can add it. Do a quick Google search or search this site and you'l find out easily what you need to do.

Regarding the *.exe files. Just remember that an exe file is a "windows executable" so they're fairly useless in Linux. Some people have no problems with Wine, others can't get it to work at all. I myself don't use it. So let me ask this: What are you wanting to run? More likely than not, there is a Linux equivalent app to choose (possibly more than one).

BTW, my sister used to live in St. Mary's :) I visited there a couple of times.

Not sure about the Mozilla problem but there are about a dozen or so browsers you can use in Linux, Mozilla, Netscape, Firebird, Opera, Links, Lynx, Konqueror, Galeon and many others.

MP3's huh, well you need to download and install mpg321 which is mp3 support that Redhat does not include in their distro.

Wine is not a resource hog. He must be thinking of VMWare which is a hog on memory.

Wine is usually your best bet as its free. Either that or you can pay and get Win4Lin, VMWare or Codeweavers, etc.

Also the .EXE I wanted to run is Diablo II, the game, Im sure you have heard of it before :)

and also, if anyone knows where to get wine and also a new internet browser,

god I feel anoying asking all these questions. If you guys dont wanna help its ok.

Hey download APT

install those three RPMS and once that is done open up the terminal and become root, onece you have done that yupe "gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" (replace gedit with "kate" if using KDE) and enter these

rpm http://apt.sw.be redhat/9/en/i386 dag
rpm http://newrpms.sunsite.dk/apt/ redhat/en/i386/9.0 newrpms

once done in the terminal (as rooot) type "apt-get update" wait then "apt-get -y install synaptic" and you can use this to update Red Hat and installl the mp3 plugin for xmms.

For mp3s I would highly recommend XMMS, it looks just like Winamp and for a former Windows user it should be easy to install and use.
