Try: Ctrl + Alt + F1 to get to a console. In the console you can logon with your username and password. And you can read log files in /var/log
If that fails to, some hardware might be broken. I had similar problems: I could logon, but my PC crashed all the time.

If I understand correctly, you can logon in a console, before trying to logon via the gui. After logging on into the gui, Ctrl + Alt + F1 doesnt work. Is this correct?

What are your system specs? Are you sure that your computer meets the minimum requirements?
Are you sure you installed the standard iso, not the server or the alternate iso?
Have you tried /etc/init.d/gdm start?
And try cat /var/log/xorg.0.log | grep EE for any error messages.

Thanx Guys for trying to help.
I managed to get it right by doing the following.
Updating the system: aptitude update
Removing ubuntu-desktop
Reinstalling ubuntu desktop: aptitude install ubuntu-desktop.
Now my problem is solved i can log into both console and GUI.
Thank you all once again.
