Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

You can reorganize your desktop icons by dragging them around to your liking. Depending on what your icons actually represent (application shortcuts, documents ..), you may want to create some sub-directories in your home directory and move them appropriately. They won't be deleted, but they will no longer appear on your "desktop". Remember, your desktop is simply a special directory in your home directory called (most likely - depending on your distro) "Desktop". If you move objects out of this directory into another, the icons will no longer appear on your desktop.
Hope this helps. By the way, for any more detailed answers, a more detailed description of your system (hardware, version of linux, desktop environment ...) would be useful - see the sticky post concerning ways to best ask questions here).
If you have Ubuntu with the Unity desktop, then that is being discontinued, so you might like to try Gnome, which will replace it and is a little more orderly. Just install Gnome using the package manager; then when you next log in, click on the little icon beside your name and you can choose Gnome.
Some of us avoid icons, and launch programs from the menu (start button) or with keyboard short-cuts like Super (aka Windows key) + e for an editor, etc.
it's a change in usage habits; i remember using windows and having a desktop cluttered like a fridge door.
now i just put stuff in the appropriate folders.
no need to look at it all the time.
the things that really need to be done: calendar application.
