Originally posted by mjkramer finally something worked! in repsponse to installing the proper plugins for xine to read commercial dvd's. I searched my linux distro installation for the plugins and installed them, making xine work! Im so excited. However how does one know which packages are needed and why doesnt the linux installation install those by default if they are on the disk? I mean there is no way for me to know these things, or is there?
P.S. Certain "Commercial" DVD's won't work.
From what I remember, libdvdcss is the most important one because most Commercial DVD's are protected by "Content Scrambling System" (aka css). This library is required to view css protected DVD's. Just be aware that this file might not be legal in places like the USA. Which kinda sucks because Winblows uses this kind of thing to allow you to view encrypted DVD's.
The reason these packages are left out of the default install is probably for legal reasons. By un-encrypting a DVD, you are effectively circumventing piracy protection and therefore probably in violation of the DMCA. Thank God we don't have that kind of law in my corner of the world ... yet!
Maybe someone who knows a little more can shed some more light on the subject.
I downloaded it, but when I try to install it through RPMDrake, I get the error message. I get the same when I try to install libdvdcss.....
One possibly stupid newbie question to go along with this. I created a directory called downloads and am saving everything I download there. Could that be part of the problem? I added the directory to the rpm sources list... any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, I was able to install the xine-d5d-0.2.7-2plf.i586.rpm......
I tried to install xine-dvdnav-1-0.rc0.3plf.i586.rpm but I keep getting an error because of failed dependencies
Error reads: xine plugins = 1-0.rc0.3plf is needed by xine-dvdnav-1-0.rc0.3plf
I downloaded the latest version of the xine plugin -- xine-plugins-1-0.rc0.7plf.i586.rpm and I got more dependency errors with that one... do I just keep searching for and downloading files until there are no more error messages or does someone have all these files?
I just tried MPlayer, and it works!!! I still will work on getting Xine working though... I just hate leaving a problem unsolved. So I still would appreciate any ideas on my plugin adventures. Thanks
Ok... Though MPlayer worked, the video was a little choppy. I tried all the available drivers in the video tab of the configuration menu, and none fixed the problem. Is there anything I can do about this?
plays dvd's without any additional plugins whatsoever
la la la
xine sucks

lmao! haha.. yea, I'm sitting here at work ssh'd into my wife's box installing all the "extras" for mplayer because I don't want to hear.. "I can't play such and such file, what's wrong" ? She has a nack of finding small little things I leave out of her box.
Mplayer does rock, I don't use the gui interface and if you are comfortable in a linux shell I'd suggest you do without it. It runs much faster without all that extra graphics most don't need.

To turn on DMA (linux doesn't by default)
Try the following
Umount your DVD
hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd (or whatever dev is your dvdplayer)
Mount your dvd
If your system is now fucked up then it(your dvd drive) doesn't support DMA.
unmount your dvd (if you still can)
hdparm -d0 /dev/dvd
to turn dma off
If the second is the case then forget about watching dvd's smoothly in linux.

unresponsive, not hosed.
if the drive doesn't support dma, or it doesn't work right, you're system
will sit there for a minutes or 2 and hopefully give up trying to read the
disk and turn dma off. those settings don't last thru a reboot anyway.
