Boot logging does not sound useful.

What you need is to get into the BIOS.

The BIOS screen will have a title at the top like "Phoenix BIOS version blah blah blah" or something like that. BIOS is often Blue and Red colored, but not always..

When you find the BIOS, you will want to go into the section for configuring Boot Devices, or Connected Disks or something like this.
You want to make your CD drive be the 1st device on the list, followed by your hard drive.

To enter the BIOS on 'acers' use the F2 key.

edit: It's 00:10 here. I'm up because of storms in the area. I might have to go and put some stock up. If the weather gets worse. We are getting some major storms here.

Then, assuming the BIOS is not password protected with a password you do not have, you should be able to locate the menu area where you can set the FIRST BOOT DEVICE (the CD) followed by the 2nd boot device (your hard drive).

Take your time, and once you get that set, make sure you save the configuration. Usually use the F10 key to save, but the save key should be listed onscreen, usually at the bottom.

Then it should reboot once you save the setup.

With your new CD in the CD drive, the reboot should boot from the CD.

anyways. I got Linux installed D. Its just not connecting to the internet now when Im on linux.

When I boot up my comp it asks me to choose vista or Linux... Im on vista right now unfortunately.


So now that I have linux, How would I transfer my music folder onto it? its only 161MB. and how do I get it to connect? it already comes with firefox im liking linux already!

Can I take my mini dvd-r disk and go down the hall and install linux on my buddies computer too just by inserting the disk?

Yes, you can go down the hall and install Linux on all the computers you like. Just stick the disk in and follow the directions it gives you as it did you your install.

A dvorak layout keyboard is just a different layout of the letter & symbol keys on the keyboard, designed for easier typing. The normal Querty layout was initially settled upon because it is difficult and non-intuitive to use, and in the old days, when typewriters were popular, it was possible to jam up the typewriter by typing too fast. Nowadays, since computers are more common than typewriters in the civilized world, there is no fear of jamming the keys, so Querty by nature is redundant. Only thing is, in the western world, the advent of software & hardware monopolies latching onto the long-used Querty design, has made it the most popular/common worldwide, and therefore most people are familiar with it, and it alone.. You can Google for more info, or check out the wikipedia page.

As for transferring your media folder to another drive, and for getting your networking device working, I suggest you turn to the Ubuntu forum where your Ubuntu-specific questions are more likely to get answered by people who use Ubuntu regularly. Note that folks will appreciate if you have done a bit of searching / research first, before perhaps asking a question that has been asked many times before. For example, if you know what type of NIC (Networking Interface Card) is in your machine, I would recommend you do a search on LQ for the name of it, or look it up in the HCL (See links to the right) and see if you can garner any hints as to what may be needed to make it work.

how about the transfer of my music file. im thinking of just buying an external hard drive and use that.

just great. I just went to load linux and its not working anymore I havnt done anything to my comp except turn it off overnight. what happened?

I get a black screen with a little writing and it doesnt go further than that. with and without the disk in the disk drive.

and my brand new age of empires game in my brand new laptop is freezing and really starting to get me mad..

Question: By what means do you turn off your computer?

Do you use the software logout and shutdown options (on BOTH Win and Linux) or do you just flick off the switch?

Another question: Please tell us what the black screen reads.. What is the writing on it?

PS - Since you appear to be in Win at the moment, you should be able to go into the Windoze Device Manager, and browse through there and locate the make & model of your NIC. Jot the info down on a paper or start a new post about trying to get it working.

sorry to be a spoils sport, but me thinks our new wow member maybe should reconsider going down the hall of shame and loading linux on his buddies computers until he has more confidence on hardware matters.

We are here to help....but I believe microsoft users should first see a live linux cd in action first before thinking about a hard drive install.

some of his buddies may be using linmodems....ones unsupported by linux....and then they may turn feral on him and do unspeakable things to him.....what kind of things...I can not say ....they are unspeakable

I didnt say I was going to go install it on ther computer, that was ust an example. you ASSUMED I was going to try to put it on someone elses computer... well you do know what happens when you assume dont you?

and I dont know what exactly you mean by a hard drive install, but im pretty sure I wasnt going to do one.

and the way I have been turning off my comp sometimes when it freezes while playing age of empires, I have no choice but to hold the power for 5 seconds... thats the only button that works. when im done for the night, I usually use the shutdown icon, not all the time though. last night when I used linux, I used the shutdown icon in the "start button"

as for the writing on the black screen.... Ill take a pic, give me 10 mins.
