Can you be more specific about your problem? What are you having a problem with? Run XMMS in the terminal to see what errors you're getting, post back, then maybe we can help you.

I used to play cd's in XMMS by opening /dev/cdrom. I guess I set some attributes for it before it started to work (on Debian Woody).

cd ripping threads??? mandrake 10.1

does anybody know a thread that has been posted before, on ripping music cd's in mandrake 10.1..... k3b is terribly slow..

It might help if you specified your distribution and version (and xmms version, for that matter)...alas, here goes:

1) Are you sure your CDROM is working? Can you mount and read data CDs?
2) do you have all the necessary dependencies installed for XMMS?
3) If you use the 'play file' to browse /dev/cdrom, the audio files should be seen, named e.g. Trackname.cda. If you select all or some you should hear music...

...also to resego, the best application for ripping in my opinion is GRIP. And if you want just a command line ripper, as fast as it gets is jack (note that JACK with capitals is a different project).

alas here goes::::

1) my cdrom does work fine...i can mount and read data and mount cd's
2) i dont know any dependencies for xmms... i am new to linux...less than 4 months..
3)i dont see anything when i use 'play files', what you sad i will see,, i dnt see it...but i do see other staffs.. like the directory dev and what it has...

i have given up on it and concluded that its crap on my laptop.....!!!!!!

Xmms won't play .wma files. You need the xmms-wma plug-in
