if startx doesn't work try (this is case sensitive!)
#XFree86 -configure
the shell (the text on the screen) will then instruct you what to type to test the new config file. if you test the config file and see a ugle screen with an x in the middle, then you are getting close. type <ctrl>-<alt>-<backspace> at the same time to end the test and then copy the new config file to /ect/X11 like this:
#cp /path/to/XF86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config
remember all these commands are case sensitive.
try startx again and you should see kde or gnome or something startup.
once you are in your desktop, go to
www.xfree86.org and check out how to configure your display to look nice.
if you have a geforce 2 pro with a pf790 monitor, i can post my config file for you to see / use if you need it. another thing to look out for is that usb mice are kinda tricky to get working sometimes, so you might wanna be sure you are using ps/2 untill you learn more about the config options.
good luck!
