Help with wine!!

I just downloaded wine and compiled everything just as the readme file said. I haven't altered any config files. When I try to run windows programs with it , I get all sorts or errors. Kazaalite just freezes up after loading, MSN messenger won't even load, Win Amp crashes after loading. The only program I can seem to get to work properly is Winzip. Please someone help!! I'm starting to lose faith in linux

You don't have to lose faith in Linux, you just need to know how to use it. Kazaa is pretty hard to get running under Redhat 9.0 with wine, I could not, so then I use xmule instead. Now, instead of trying to run programs for Windows under Linux, you should try finding for Linux program which has the same function of Windows programs. You don't have to use MSN, you can use the great GAIM, included with your RedHat 9.0 CD's and that, in one program, runs ICQ, MSN, AIM and god knows what more. Winamp? You don't need that either. Linux uses XMMS, which comes as well with your RedHat CD's and plays MP3's. Winzip? You don't need it either, it's already installed in your system. to unzip a file, type at the console:

unzip <name of the file>

TAR also does it. First try getting a equivalent program natively made for Linux to run. Use wine ONLY in the latest case. If you are not happy with Linux's browsers, messengers, compressors, media players after all, it's better to stick with Windows ratter then tear your hairs apart getting a Windows program to run under Linux.

Here is a complete equivalent list Windows - Linux. It's a bit dated, but should answer most of your questions:

Good luck

Did you create the windows and windows\system directories in your virtual C: drive.
Take a look at the config file for wine.

What are the error messages ?

hi

try using the linux native programs

for example instead of winamp use xmms
winzip: kark,fileroller
msn: gaim,amsn
kazaa: emule,edonkey

I'd definitely recommend msn
