Help with the running processes
 

Hi.
I am using mandriva Free 2007 (on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, 2.0 Ghz centrino with 512 MB ram) and at the moment, my system seems to be really slowing down and a ps -A shows about a zillion processes running.. Can any one help me out on which processes are not "required" and should be killed...(also on how to prevent them from running again on startup)..

I'd start off by checking out
and possibly
to determine how much memory is used and which processes use the most resources. NOTE: I know it's possible that some processes might seem to consume 98% of your half a gig memory, if you calculate it the straight way, but that's not the whole truth (threads make difference) :)

But see top it should show you to a start.
