Help with starting Linux from Windows-default system?

Hi to all,

My husband passed away two weeks ago. I thought I had
everything in place ahead of time, but now I realize
I can't access the Linux portion of his hard disk, where our
financial files are located.

The computer boots up by default in Windows XP. Before it gets
there, first it displays a "Gigabyte Energy Saver" screen, then
for half a second it shows a black screen with white text. At the bottom
I think there is a command-line boot prompt, but it goes by very

Can someone tell me how to get into Linux? And can you point me
to a primer so I can start finding my way around?

Many thanks

If it is a dual boot system the bootloader is the black screen after the gigabyte screen that shows up very quickly. You have to press any key when its at that screen and it will stay at that screen. Then use the arrow keys to select the linux OS.

If that doesn't work, you could always try running a live distro such as Ubuntu and mounting the linux hard disk from the live distribution to copy the files off.
