help with samba

Greetings all..my first post. very little expererience with linux. recent install of ubuntu 6.06 lts and some growing pains are evident.marked samba for download and applied change in syn package manager, seemed to download okay but can't find it. Used fedora core in the past and had no problem finding samba, what am i doing wrong?? Any advice would be appreciated.

Samba should already be running in the background. You're all set to go! Just start editing the /etc/samba/smb.conf file. Remember to restart the samba service after making changes!

Have found samba and will try editing the smb.conf file.

I now can see the login from my windows machine but it will not accept my username or password. I am thinking that they need to be set in smb.conf or do you send them from the terminal. Have full access to all drives on the windows machine, from the linux machine, but nothing looking from windows to the linux box other than the login. Thanks..
