help with Mandrake 9.2 problems
 

I am very new at this I installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 yesterday partitioned on a XP Pro operating system. Everything went smooth after install I rebooted computer. Here's what happened when I chose
linux in the boot window:

1. interface etho.....Failed ( I ignored ) it then proceeded :

2. Local Host login : I tried everything I put my user name and password and tried my root password nothing worked. Another forum suggested I install Mandrake 9.2 again which I did here's what I got :

1. Stopped, a window saying not enough memory and I clicked 'ok' nothing happened so I shut down computer and started up again and here is where I am at now :

2. Kernal Panic : no init found. try pressing init = option to kernal.


I have no idea what to do at this point I'm new at this and don't really know what I'm doing. I just want to get Linux 9.2 running.

How much memory do you have? Did you make a swap partition during installation?

I just let linux do the partitioning and the window poped up saying not enough memory. So I am assuming I do not have enough memory left on the linux partition. Xp Pro is running fine. Remember I did another install of Linux using remaining free space, this is probally why I don't have enough space there must be two copies of liniux on the partition after the first install of linux, What do you think I should do to correct this problem. Do you have free unpartitioned space on your hd? You can delete Linux partitions from the Windows control panel. Use the XP cd to restore the bootloader.

You could also start the Mandrake install again and when it comes to the partitioning tell it to use existing linux partitions but check mark the box that says you want to review the changes before continuing.

That'll take you to the screen that shows all the partition layouts. Make sure everything's being used. From there you could always click once on all the partitions that AREN'T the windows partition and delete them one by one (windows is usually blue, linux is usually red - and windows will probably say fat32 or fat or ntfs) then you should have two partitions: the one windows partition and a big, grey empty space.

There should be a button called Auto Partition (or the like - man my memory is bad). That'll set them up nicely. Finish up the install and it'll install the bootloader and you should be good to go :)

Thanks a lot! I now have a Mandrake Linux operating system !!! I now have to configure the intermet settings. I did everything just the way you told me to do, actually it was very easy! You just helped an old man.

Glad to help! Might as well continue, though - what's the matter with your network connection?

I just emailed off to sympatico my service provider. The settings I used were not correct. I am using a simple Lan connection (ethernet) Linux detected it allright.

But when I enter hostname ip addy's etc. it don"t connect. I'm using High Speed internet through Sympatico.

That might be because you should be using DHCP, no?

Unless you have a higher-tier connection that gives you a static IP address, you should use DHCP and not have to (let alone be able to) enter an IP address.

Can you help me find drivers for my modem this is the reason I have trouble connecting to the internet. linux is telling me my Modem is not compatile with Mandrake Linux 9.2.

My Modem:

I can't find anything in the HCL and I've never heard of that modem.

If Mandrake doesn't support it right out of the box (so to speak) then it's probably not going to work. You could always just go out and spend probably $15 on a standard modem (checking the HCL first, though, to make sure it works) and then you'd be set.
